Despite his 22 years in Materials Engineering, workshop supervisor John Calamatta
might well be described as a jack of all trades.
John migrated to Australia from Malta at aged 16, completing his apprenticeship in fitting and turning at Collingwood Tech soon after.
Over the next 25 years, he held a number of jobs, ranging in length from two days to 12 years.
In 1979, John and his family moved back to Malta, only to return to Australia shortly after, having found that "Malta didn't feel like home anymore".
Soon after his return, John started at Monash as a lab technician in Materials Engineering and 10 years later was promoted to workshop supervisor, where he is mainly employed in preparing materials specimens for testing.
He ascribes his long service at Monash to "working in a good environment with great people".
John is contemplating retirement, however. He plans to continue playing the saxophone, do a jazz course, become a gym instructor and enjoy spending time with his wife of 40 years.
