Gippsland social welfare lecturer Karen Crinall successfully combines her
interest in social issues with her artistic talents.
Karen grew up in Mornington, then went on to study painting, sculpture and photography at Caulfield in the mid-70s.
After graduating in fine arts, she moved to Gippsland to do a graduate diploma in education. Influenced by the political environment of the times, she volunteered at a women's refuge.
Wanting to experience life outside of study, Karen decided to take a break. Her subsequent roles included childcare coordinator, artist and live-in supervisor at youth hostels and houses. She is also mother to four children.
Along the way, she also managed to complete her graduate diploma, as well as a masters in education.
A highlight during this time was Karen's production and collation of a national photographic exhibition titled Images of Homelessness.
In 1994, Karen became a lecturer in social welfare at Gippsland. She is also a researcher for the Victorian Homelessness Strategy, and believes that "the university is a huge resource for rural communities and that academics have a social responsibility towards the community".
Karen is still an artist, and enjoys swimming, yoga and folk music.
