Travel prize chance for Monash sculptors

Seven Monash students are in the running to win the inaugural Baldessin Arts 21 Travelling Fellowship.

The fellowship is named after gifted artist and sculptor George Baldessin, who died in a car accident in 1978. The winner will be announced at the Faculty Gallery, Caulfield campus, on 23 November.

Graduating third-year sculpture students from Monash, RMIT, and the Victorian College of the Arts are eligible for the fellowship.

A $16,000 prize will give the winner the opportunity to pursue their studies overseas.

The Monash finalists are:

Mr Roman Liebach - a wooden construction inspired by Melbourne's Station Pier;

Mr Jesse Walsh - a series of 12 head studies moulded in plaster and featuring some of his relatives;

Ms Renee Whyte - a series of small crowns made out of cardboard arranged in a spiral shape on the floor;

Ms Pia Blair - a tent structure draped with a tapestry woven with plastic strips;

Ms Jemima Jones - a circular structure made out of rice paper forming a grid pattern on the floor;

Ms Emma Brook - a minimalist floor work; and

Ms Caroline Le Sueur - a dress made out of dishwashing sponges.

National Gallery of Victoria deputy director Mr Tony Elwood will judge the award, which will be presented by NGV director Dr Gerard Vaughan.
