Sustained contributions lead to excellence awards

Eight outstanding staff were recipients of the 2000 Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Exceptional Performance by General Staff last week.

Vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson presented the awards at a morning tea gathering and thanked the winners for their outstanding contribution to Monash.

"It's not always easy to demonstrate excellence in a sustained way, and that's what these awards recognise," he said.

Ms Fran Boyce's award was based on her performance in establishing a cohesive administrative unit for the Finance Office in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the Clayton and Caulfield campuses.

This involved training all staff and maintaining open communication within the finance unit after the merger of four departments to create the school.

Ms Carol Logan, administrative secretary to the Department of Biological Sciences head, showed initiative in expanding her role to become an excellent personal assistant and broadly skilled administrative resources officer dealing with a wide range of academic and student matters.

Mrs Sue Stevenson, from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, received her award for her postgraduate administration work and her compilation of research publications, used in attracting government funding for research.

Asian Studies Research Library team Ms Helen Soemardjo, Mr Dennis Kishere, Ms Jung-Sim Kim, Ms Chooi-Hon Ho and Ms Eiko Sakaguchi were recognised for creating a one-stop shop to provide Asian Studies researchers with easy access to the subject specialists, Asian script collections and electronic resources.

The annual awards recognise exceptional performance by general staff who have made significant contributions to improve service provision, create a high-quality environment for students and/or staff, optimise technological capabilities, or promote seamless operations in university administration.

The winners received a certificate, financial support for further personal development, and a permanent citation in the Monash University Calendar.
