Nobel laureate inspires science students

More than 200 students gathered to hear Nobel Prize-winning scientist Professor Peter Doherty talk about 'The Scientific Life'.

Organiser Mr Marcus Nicol, from the Department of Physiology, said the special PhD student seminar was organised to give students an insight into possible science careers.

Professor Doherty talked about his own science career, which culminated in winning the 1996 Nobel Prize for medicine.

He encouraged students to think beyond traditional research roles and gave advice about pursuing science-related careers both in Australia and overseas.

He said many opportunities existed for scientists in areas such as intellectual property management, a lucrative area given the interest in biotechnology companies.

Other speakers during the forum were Walter and Eliza Hall Institute scientist Dr Doug Hilton, recipient of the Commonwealth Health Minister's Prize for outstanding research, and Dr Suzie Miller, from University College, London. Both are Monash graduates.
