Monash Memo - 16 May 2001Back to this edition's story list Space for Caravaggio
An exhibition highlighting the use of space in the work of 16th century Italian painter Caravaggio opened last week at the Faculty Gallery. Monash fine arts lecturer Mr Roger Byrt and Melbourne architect Mr Robert McGauran put together the show Understanding Space and its Relationship to Expression: Analysing Caravaggio's Mistakes in 3D, which runs until 2 June. They compared the scene in Caravaggio's painting 'The Conversion of St Paul' with 3D models and computer images of the work. This is intended to show the range of spatial techniques used by Caravaggio in the painting, including proportional manipulation and distortion of individual figures. "The overall effect of Caravaggio's manipulation of space, scale and perspective is to bring the action right out to the viewer," Mr Byrt said. For inquiries, contact extn 32882.
