Monash Memo - 16 May 2001Back to this edition's story list South African art success
South African High Commissioner His Excellency Mr Zolile T. Magugu visited Monash for the opening of the exhibition Puddled Sand and Red Ashes last week. Speaking to a crowd of about 200 people at the Faculty Gallery in Caulfield, Mr Zolile praised the exhibition by South African artist-in-residence Lallitha Jawahirilal. He said Ms Jawahirilal's paintings accurately reflected South Africa and the way the country was developing, also mentioning the beauty of her birthplace in Ladysmith. Her artworks are based on the spiritual activity and energy she draws from different cultural landscapes. Faculty of Art and Design dean Professor John Redmond said he was delighted to have an artist of Ms Jawahirilal's calibre visiting from South Africa, where Monash already had links through its newly-opened Johannesburg campus. Puddled Sand and Red Ashes will run at the Faculty Gallery until 2 June. For further inquiries, contact extn 32882. Caption: His Excellency Mr Zolile T.
