Monash Memo - 30 May 2001Back to this edition's story list BriefsLearning for life The Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET) will host a seminar titled 'Lifelong learning: sounds good but what does it mean?' early next month. Policy analyst Mr Richard Curtain, from Curtain Consulting, will discuss policies that will enable lifelong learning to be put into practice, especially for older workers. He will speak about how institutions need to change to give individuals more power over what and how they learn. Mr Curtain has written many reports on training and policy for youth, including submissions for the Department of Employment, Training and Youth Affairs and the United Nations. The seminar will be held at 12.30 pm on Thursday 7 June at the Monash Conference Centre, 7th floor, 30 Collins Street, Melbourne. To RSVP, contact extn 59157. Fulbright scholarship winner Monash postgraduate chemistry student Ms Rita Harika has recently been awarded a $40,000 Fulbright scholarship. Ms Harika won the BHP-sponsored science and engineering award from a field of candidates from all over Australia. She will spend a year at the University of California in Irvine, undertaking research for a PhD in rare earth chemistry. A total of 19 Fulbright scholarships were awarded to Australian students and professionals planning to study in the US in fields ranging from law and engineering to poetry and music. Categories include postgraduate, postdoctoral, professional and senior scholar awards. Art and design students in Prato Twenty-four art and design students will leave in July to spend a semester studying at the Monash centre in Prato. The eight-week program for fine and applied arts students will include an intensive theory unit taken by Dr Bronwyn Stocks, which will be conducted on cultural sites around Tuscany including Florence, Siena, Pisa and Prato itself. Professional development The Professional Development Institute (PDI) offers a variety of courses to Monash staff. Courses are available for those interested in educational planning for students with special needs, adolescent counselling, school welfare, school leadership, and nutrition and health, as well as for integration aides.
