Monash Memo - 4 July 2001Back to this edition's story list Plastic Fantastic
More than 120 grade three children were given the chance to stretch their minds at the Plastic Fantastic Science sessions held at Peninsula campus this week. Part of Education Week, Plastic Fantastic offered children from Mornington Park Primary and Dandenong West Primary a variety of hands-on activities with a science focus. Faculty of Education senior lecturer Dr Karen Malone said the sessions provided students and their teachers with an opportunity to explore the properties of plastic through scientific experimentation and artistic playfulness. "I decided to run with Plastic Fantastic because I believe chemical science is a particular area that primary science teachers find a little confronting," she said. "The aim of the sessions is to show that chemical science can be a lot of fun and involves materials that both kids and teachers have had experience with, such as bubble gum, balloons, slime and jelly." Plastic Fantastic was sponsored by the Department of Education, Employment and Training (DEET) and continued the collaborative work of Dr Malone and fellow lecturer Ms Geraldine Burke. |
