Monash Memo - 1 August 2001Back to this edition's story list Getting ready for the Monash STRIPThe Monash Science Technology Research and Industry Precinct (STRIP) will start to take shape from late October when building works commence on the Clayton campus. The first stage of the development on the western ring road will house industry partners and Monash researchers from several of the Monash science-based faculties and will be ready for occupation by the end of next year. According to the chair of the Steering Committee, deputy vice-chancellor (Resources) Ms Alison Crook, the environment created in the Monash STRIP will support inter-disciplinary research by co-locating teams of researchers from different faculties. "A synergistic environment is essential if Monash is to attract more industry involvement in cutting-edge research and development," she said. Faculty representatives are currently working with deans, the deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Peter Darvall and Ms Crook to identify research areas that might be developed and supported by the Monash STRIP. The STRIP will be part of a significant research and industry cluster centred on Clayton and includes the national synchrotron facility recently announced by the state government. During August, a series of meetings will be held with faculty staff, who will be involved in the first stage of the Monash STRIP. In the interim, queries may be addressed to faculty representatives on the Steering Committee: Arts: Professor Homer Le Grand; Caption: Involved in planning for the Monash STRIP are, from left, Professor Warwick Anderson, Professor Homer Le Grand and Professor Chris Cocklin. |
