Briefs

Greening the state

Senior lecturer in environmental ethics and politics Dr Robyn Eckersley will give a talk later this month on 'Greening the nation state: from exclusive to inclusive sovereignty'.

The talk, which will take place on 30 August, is part of a seminar series hosted by the School of Political and Social Inquiry.

Dr Eckersley is the author of Environmentalism and Political Theory: Toward and Ecocentric Approach and is currently working on a second book called 'The Green State'.

The free seminar will be held at 1 pm in Manton Room SG02 on Clayton campus.

Federation secrets

Director of the Centre for Population and Urban Research Dr Bob Birrell will argue against the view that Federation did little to reduce Australia's dependence on Britain, at a Club 66 function at Clayton campus this month.

One of Australia's leading social scientists, Dr Birrell says the many negative and inaccurate accounts of Australian independence had led revisionists to undermine Australian pride in the achievements of our founding fathers.

Dr Birrell says his annoyance at this widely held view was one of the reasons behind the decision to write his latest book, 'Federation: The Secret Story'.

The Club 66 talk, which is open to the public, will be held on 24 August at 1.30 pm in the West Banquet Room, first floor, Campus Centre, Clayton. It will be followed by a morning tea and question time. Admission is $10.

For more information or to book, contact Mr Gerard Healy on extn 52044.

Eco-friendly week

Do the green thing and check out the activities on offer during Environment Week, running at Monash until 10 August.

Organised by the Monash Student Association, the week includes forums, video screenings and information stalls around the Clayton Campus Centre.

For more information, contact Ms Rhea Dhillon on extn 55710 or Ms Liz Turner on extn 54134.

Kyoto forum

The Monash Environment Institute is inviting those interested in environmental issues to attend an interactive forum on 13 and 14 August at the Sheraton Towers, Melbourne.

Understanding the significance of trading to both business and the environment will be the focus of the forum, titled 'Emissions trading and the Kyoto paradigm'.

Greenhouse gas abatement procedures and techniques will be discussed, as will Australia's business future and global competitiveness.

The likely outcomes of the renewed United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting held in July will also be assessed.
