Monash triumph at uni games

Monash overcame all opposition to win the Southern University Games, held during July in regional Victoria.

In a fiercely fought finish, Monash sport teams overtook close rivals to win with a final tally of 126 points, the University of Melbourne finishing second with 110 points.

About 1800 university athletes and managers from 15 universities across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia descended on the regional centre of Bendigo during the games.

The games serve as a feeder to the Australian University Games, which will be held in Sydney during September.

Monash has placed well over recent years at the AUG, but has been unable to eclipse Melbourne University team since 1997.

Sport development manager Ms Briony Schofield said this year "promised to be one of the most successful to date".

"Our recent success at the Southern University Games has inspired our teams, who are now preparing for a tenacious attempt at the AUG," she said.
