Getting ahead in the job market

Graduate recruitment specialists gave students tips on how to land a job at a special careers program at Clayton campus in July.

During the three-day Career Start program, hosted by MONSEACS, specialists from both the public and private sectors gave the employers' perspective on recruiting and offered advice on preparing for job selection processes.

Workshops and information sessions provided advice on identifying work skills, finding opportunities in the hidden job market, assessing small business options and producing a well-tailored resume and application.

A popular session on staying motivated gave students tips on remaining positive when job searching.

Students also took part in practical exercises, which gave them an understanding of psychometric and aptitude testing in the selection process, while representatives from Ford, Chandler Macleod and Ernst & Young provided them with an insight into assessment centres.

A highlight of the program was the session on interview skills, in which students were offered feedback on their interview performance and general advice on marketing themselves during interviews.

Employers who provided their expertise included Grant Thornton, Expert Information Systems, Accenture, the Department of Defence, Australian Volunteers International and Pitcher Partners.

Careers counsellors Ms Lynda Rohan and Mr Con Moraitis coordinated the program.
