Overseas sport endeavour

Six Monash student athletes will travel to Beijing to compete in the World University Summer Games from 22 August to 1 September.

Ms Helen Sanders, Mr Ben Scott and Mr Anthony Wardrop (volleyballers), Mr Tim Williams and Ms Jacqi Munro (athletics) and Mr Jamie Smyth (water polo) have each received grants funded by the Sports and Recreation Association and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for their trip.

The six will be part of a team of 130 athletes, the biggest Australian team to ever take part in the games, which includes athletics, basketball, soccer, volleyball, water polo, tennis and judo.

Monash Sports and Recreation Association director Mr James Voght said the games were the largest elite multi sporting event in the world outside of the Olympics.

"The games not only provide a great stepping stone for our athletes with Commonwealth and Olympic ambitions, they also enable our students to interact with university students from around the world," he said.
