Monash Memo - 15 August 2001Back to this edition's story list Public transport forumThe need for improved public transport to Monash's Clayton campus was highlighted in a forum held during Environment Week. About 60 people attended the forum, 'Public transport solutions for Monash, Clayton', which featured four speakers. Civil Engineering department head Professor Bill Young gave an historical overview of transport availability to Monash, while Monash City councilor Mr Geoff Lake spoke about the work of the regional committees that were grappling with the issue. President of the Public Transport Users' Association Mr Paul Mees highlighted the need for better public transport to Monash and the need to further lobby governments for funding that has traditionally been spent on freeways and roads. Anecdotal evidence of the problems associated with travelling to Monash was provided by Monash Student Association environment officer Ms Rhea Dhillon, while MSA transport officer Ms Liz Turner said the outcome of the forum was positive, with several people volunteering to help with the push to improve public transport to Monash. Ms Turner said they would work with the newly formed transport committee, headed by facilitator Ms Susan Heron working in conjunction with the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources). |
