Monash Memo - 12 September 2001

Back to this edition's story list

Not in anyone's backyard

How the Werribee community managed to defeat both the Kennett government and CSR over the issue of toxic waste will be the subject of a free seminar next month.

Dr Paul Strangio, who lectures in the School of Political and Social Inquiry, will deliver the paper, which focuses on the important achievement of the Werribee community.

The paper, titled 'From Nimby (not in my backyard) to Niaby (not in anyone's backyard): A model of non-parochial grass roots action', will examine how the small community action group defeated two powerful bodies and precipitated a major change in public policy in the important area of industrial waste management.

He will explain how the group provided an exemplary model of a proactive and non-parochial form of community activism.

Dr Strangios's biography of Dr Jim Cairns will be published by Melbourne University Press later this year.

The seminar will be held on 4 October in the Manton room SG02, at 1 pm.

Personal portal power

A forum that will focus on services and uses associated with the my.monash portal will be held on Friday 14 September on Clayton campus.

Titled 'Personal portal power: using your my.monash portal effectively', the HEPCIT seminar will help both staff and students build personal portal 'landscapes'.

The forum will cover the centrally provided services associated with the portal which Monash offers through the Academic Support Network (ITS, the library and the CeLTS) and give examples of how academic staff are using portal services in their teaching.

It will take place in central one lecture theatre between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm. There will also be a video link to Gippsland campus (room 2W263).

To assist with catering or to reserve a place at the Gippsland venue, please RSVP to yolande.mcnicoll@med.monash.edu.au by 12 September.
