Milestone for Malaysia campus

image malaysian graduation History was made last week with the graduation of the first students from Monash University Malaysia.

More than 100 Monash University Malaysia students graduated at the ceremony, held on 20 September in Sunway Lagoon
Resort Hotel, Bandar Sunway.

Monash has held graduation ceremonies in Malaysia since 1991, but this was the first time the ceremony included Monash
students who have undertaken their degrees in Malaysia. Also graduating were more than 200 students who studied at Monash
campuses in Australia.

A total of 116 Monash University Malaysia students received their degrees at the ceremony, which was attended by
vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson, chancellor Mr Jerry Ellis and Monash Malaysia pro vice-chancellor Professor
Robert Bignall, as well as senior academic staff from other Monash campuses, senior Monash alumni and other VIPs.

The graduating Monash University Malaysia students were awarded degrees in business and commerce, biotechnology,
environmental management and computer science. Also graduating were nursing students who have completed a two-year
program. Students undertaking the four-year engineering degree who enrolled at the same time will graduate next year.

The occasional address was delivered by Y. B. Dato' Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, who was awarded an honorary
Doctor of Laws.

More than 500 people attended a celebratory dinner, held the evening before the graduation.

Speaking at the dinner, chairman of Monash University Malaysia Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sopiee said the event marked an
important milestone for Monash's seventh campus.

"Tonight we have with us some 100 pioneering and brave students who ventured into the unknown when they first enrolled at
this new institution three years ago. In less than 24 hours, we will be witnessing their convocation. Tonight's dinner is to
celebrate their success," he said.

His theme was echoed by Professor Bignall, who warmly congratulated the graduates for their spirit and initiative.
