Former deputy vice-chancellor mourned

Monash staff farewelled Emeritus Professor Kevin Charles Westfold at a memorial service at the Holy Advent Anglican Church in Armadale on 5 October.

The former deputy vice-chancellor of Monash University began his career at Monash in 1960, when he was appointed the first professor of mathematics.

During his 26 years at the university, he also served as dean of the Faculty of Science (1962-75), professor of astronomy (1976-82) and pro vice-chancellor (1976).

He was appointed the university's second deputy vice-chancellor in 1982 and served in this position until his retirement at the end of 1986.

Professor Westfold made important contributions to the development of mathematics generally and to his special field of astronomy.

He was the associate editor of the Australian Mathematical Society's journal and acted as both vice-president (1973-75) and president (1975-77) of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

Professor Westfold passed away on 3 October aged 70 years and will be greatly missed by the university community.
