Public relations award

Monash's Marketing and Public Affairs division has picked up a major industry award for its work on the launch of the South Africa campus.

The Marketing and Public Affairs team was highly commended by the Public Relations Institute of Australia at the Victorian Awards for Excellence for developing and implementing the 2000 South Africa marketing plan.

The award was received under the category of 'comprehensive communications strategy'. Monash was the only university nominated in the PRIA awards this year.

Ms Cathy Kirkham, manager, University Marketing accepted the award on behalf of the team of people who worked on developing and implementing marketing and public relations activities to launch the Monash brand in South Africa in 2000.

Other members of the team included Professor John Anderson, pro vice-chancellor, Monash South Africa campus, Mr David Bruce, manager, Media Liaison, Ms Caroline Knowles, manager, Prospective Students Office, and Ms Duyen Vo, marketing coordinator, University Marketing.

Ms Kirkham said it was "an honour" to be recognised for the campaign, which resulted in 3000 inquiries and the enrolment of 50 students within a 10-month period.

She said Ms Vo deserved special congratulations for putting together the submission to the PRIA which resulted in the award.

In congratulating Marketing and Public Affairs on the award, Mr Anderson said the marketing group had assumed a "big task" when they set out to establish the Monash brand and the Monash name in a new environment.

"Good progress has been made in a short time, and this award recognises some of the work involved," he said.
