High hoops for South Africa

Despite little experience on the court, the newly formed Monash South Africa basketball team has scored a victory in its first outing.

Consisting of seven male and seven female students, the first official sports team at the campus has, for the most part, never played the game before.

The winning match against Ceda City Campus was held at the Barnato Park basketball courts in Hillbrow on 22 September.

At a meeting of the new MUSA student association earlier this year, it became clear that there was a demand for sports, in particular basketball, to be started on the campus.

Hoops and balls were purchased, and the dribbling began twice a week under the guidance of ex-SA National Team coach Mr John Domingues and some very tall members of the Molten Basketball Academy.

Although an informal group at this stage, the Monash South Africa basketball team hopes to join the national universities league next year where, according to player Ms Gillian Tseriwa, "we are going to wipe them clean!".
