Introducing Monash

All new Monash staff are invited to attend the final 'Introducing Monash' morning for 2001, to be held from 9 am to 1 pm on Thursday 8 November at the Staff Development Unit, 700 Blackburn Road, Clayton.

This half-day orientation program, offered at regular intervals throughout the year, is designed to welcome new staff and assist in their induction by providing an introduction to the university from a number of perspectives.

Presenters, including senior management, will speak on a wide range of topics from the university's strategic plan, Leading the Way: Monash 2020, to the current services and facilities available to staff and students.

During morning tea, there will be an opportunity for staff to speak with key staff service providers and to get to know other Monash staff.

To register, contact Staff Development on extn 56800. Application forms are also available from the SDU website at www.monash.edu.au/personnel/sdu/

Three grants from Apple

Three Monash staff have won assistance in this year's rounds of Apple University Developer Fund grants.

Four grant applications were submitted by Monash and three were successful in the grant process, which attracted 35 applications from 31 Australian universities.

In only its second year as a member of the Apple University Consortium, Monash received more grants than any other university that applied.

Research engineer Mr Daniel Grimm was successful for his electrical and computer systems engineering project 'Extension to QuickTime Streaming (Video) Services to IPv6'.

Institution services/network manager in the Department of Chemistry Mr Don McGilvery will receive a grant for his chemistry project 'MacSimion X', and senior lecturer in the School of Business Dr Yen Ping Cheung won support for the school's project, 'A General Purpose AI Tool'.
