Monash Memo - articles - 7 November 2001Going greener
Recycling of paper, cardboard, printer cartridges, bottles and cans has now been extended at Monash through the network of Green Office representatives. The Softex paper recycling bins can now take a range of paper items including exercise books, coloured paper, manila folders, window envelopes, paper towels and newspapers bundled with string or elastic bands. Monash collects approximately 340 tonnes of paper per year, which is recycled and sold back to the university, at a competitive price, as tissues, paper hand towels and toilet paper. Cardboard recycling is available at the Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses, as well as at the Box Hill and Alfred hospitals. Convenient locations for the placement of flattened cardboard are listed on the OHSE environment website. At the Clayton campus alone, a total of 84 tonnes of cardboard is being recycled each year - paper that is now being diverted from landfill and put back 'into the loop'. All staff are encouraged to become involved and make their contribution to helping the environment. A list of Green Office representatives has been posted on the website, and staff who have questions or ideas relating to the environment can contact their representatives or OHSE for assistance. The Monash environment web page provides information on recycling at all campuses and can be found at www.adm.monash.edu.au/ohse/environment/recycling/introrecycle.htm |
