Students have designs on Italian art experience

A group of Monash art and design students have just returned from an exciting study tour in Prato, where they experienced first-hand the work of renowned Italian artists and architects.

Dr Bronwyn Stocks, from the Faculty of Art and Design, said the 25 students of painting, sculpture, tapestry, metal work, printmaking and ceramics had used the new studio facilities at the Palazzo Vaj, home to Monash's Centre in Prato.

"As part of the theory component of their course, the students travelled around Tuscany looking at architectural landmarks as well as visiting the galleries and museums around the city," she said.

"This is a marvellous experience for the students - it's different to studying art from textbooks.

"To actually see these things up close, to have a sense of the geographical and historical context in which they are placed, enables the students to have a greater understanding and appreciation of the artistic qualities of the work."

Second-year fine arts student Ms Liat Azoulay said the experience of participating in the Prato program had been an invaluable one.

"It was a fantastic experience, and while it's still early days at the Prato Centre there is a great deal to build on and the facility will go from strength to strength," she said.
