New director to build bridges with Europe

Professor Merran Evans has been named as director of Monash in London, replacing retiring pro vice-chancellor Professor Dick White from the start of next year.

Although based in Melbourne, Professor Evans, currently director of Planning and Academic Affairs, will travel to London for two-week visits four times a year in an effort to forge stronger European links.

Professor Evans said she planned to continue Monash's objectives of developing close and cooperative working relations in research, teaching and development projects with European academic and research institutions, starting with King's College London and working out from that base.

"I also hope the new Europe Steering Group will facilitate better access by Monash to European research funds from various sources, identify opportunities for private or public sector utilisation of Monash expertise and assist in marketing Monash to potential students," she said.

"I look forward to receiving ongoing suggestions and feedback from Monash colleagues to advance these objectives."

Advance notice of Monash staff visiting Europe to organise activities was also welcome, Professor Evans said.
