A feast of art

Visitors to two new exhibitions by graduating Art and Design students are in for a treat at Monash's Caulfield campus this month.

Special Combination Dish No 3 and Price Check on Fresh Produce showcase works by final-year students in the Department of Applied Arts. According to Faculty of Art and Design marketing manager Ms Kirsten Freeman, the exhibitions are "a testament to the skill of the young graduates, their optimism, fresh outlook and potential for future success".

Special Combination Dish No 3 features beautifully crafted jewellery, blown glass, ceramics, and metalwork, while Price Check on Fresh Produce showcases graduating students' painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry and photography. All works are for sale.

The exhibitions are part of the 'Heading for Greener Pastures' series of graduating student exhibitions. Exhibitions of works by students graduating in industrial design, visual communication and design will also go on show, starting this month.

Special Combination Dish No 3 and Price Check on Fresh Produce are on show until Friday 30 November in the gallery in building B, levels 6 and 7, at the Caulfield campus.

Looks can be deceiving: 'Natural Selection (sampler)', an exhibit by third-year ceramics student Ms Katie Jacobs, looks good enough to eat, but the chocolate sculptures are of slip-cast stoneware. Ms Jacobs was this year's winner of the D.W. Rogers Award for Applied Arts. The award is presented to the best third-year applied arts student who intends to continue on to honours studies in 2002.
