Items of interest from Council meeting, 12 November

Chancellor's business

The chancellor informed Council of the recently announced Ministerial appointment to Council of Mr Akim Bannikoff, director of Portfolio Integration, Department of Education, Employment and Training, and reported on the progress of his annual round of discussions with Council members.

Vice-chancellor's business

The vice-chancellor reported on actions initiated in light of the recent round of ARC grants and provided Council with an update on Monash South Africa.

Membership Committee of Council

Council endorsed the recommendation of the Committee that Associate Professor Louise Adler and Mr John Laurie be reappointed to Council and that the persons named in the report be recommended to the Minister for approval by Cabinet for appointment as Governor-in-Council appointees to Council for terms of office commencing 1 January 2002 and ending 31 December 2004. Further, Council endorsed the appointment of Ms Penny Hutchinson as chairperson of Audit Committee.

Council received reports on:

Budget 2002

The deputy vice-chancellor and vice-president (Resources) and the divisional director, Financial Resources Management, presented the Budget for 2002. Council adopted the Monash University Budget 2002.

University-Wide Performance Indicators

Council received the report on university-wide performance indicators and were advised that these would be further discussed at the 20th November meeting of the Committee of Deans.

Future Directions: Student and Staff Services Division

Council received the future directions report on the Student and Staff Services Division as presented by Mr Peter Marshall, divisional director, Student and Staff Services.

Federal Election

The vice-chancellor reported to Council that the statement After Election 2001: Key Higher Education Issues had been distributed to leaders of all political parties, members of cabinet and shadow cabinet and candidates in all Victorian electorates and that he had received positive feedback on the themes outlined in the statement.

Other business

* Council awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) to Professor Bob Williams;

* Council approved a revised committee structure reporting to Council and the Resources and Finance Committee of Council;

* Council received and noted the Report of the Gippsland Advisory Council; and

* Council received the Report of the Returning Officer for the recent Council elections and noted that Professor Tam Sridhar was elected unopposed for a term commencing 1 January 2002 and ending 31 December 2003.
