Monash Memo - articles- 12 December 2001Excellence in teaching rewardedStaff who ledinnovative programs in the fields of information technology and medicinewere among the winners of the 2001 Vice-Chancellor's Awards forDistinguished Teaching. Winners of the Postgraduate Supervisioncategory and the new Excellence in Team-Based Educational Developmentcategory were also announced by vice-chancellor Professor David Robinsonlast week. Dr Kathy Blashki, of the School of Multimedia Systems atBerwick, received a Distinguished Teaching award for her support for thelearning processes of the individual student. Her particular interest isthe needs of students with learning difficulties and/ordisabilities. Also winning a Distinguished Teaching award was Dr DavidGoddard of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, basedat The Alfred hospital. Dr Goddard teaches in the areas ofoccupational and public health. He was nominated by both undergraduateand postgraduate students, who described him as "a hands-on,student-oriented and caring course convenor". Professor Alan Bishop ofthe Education faculty at Clayton and Professor Amrik Sohal of theDepartment of Management at Caulfield both received awards forPostgraduate Supervision. The Excellence in Team-Based EducationalDevelopment award was won jointly by Mr Gordon Lowe, Dr Ann Nicholson,team leader Ms Judy Sheard and Mr Jason Ceddia of the School ofComputing and Software Engineering at Caulfield. The award was givento the team for its work on 'Tackling transition from the other side:Taking tertiary IT projects into schools'. The winners receive cash, amedallion and a permanent citation in the University Calendar.The teaching and supervision winners each receive $5000, while theteam-based educational development winners receive a total of$15,000. This year's Special Commendations went to: * Mr LindsaySmith - School of Computing and Information Technology, Gippsland- Distinguished Teaching; * Dr Qi Su - Department ofElectrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Clayton - Distinguished Teaching; * Dr Paul James - Department of Politics,Clayton - Postgraduate Supervision; * Dr Andrew Lawrence -Department of Pharmacology, Clayton - PostgraduateSupervision.
