Fun and learning at Camp Monash

Almost 200 Year 11 students descended on Monash's Claytoncampus recently for the 2001 Camp Monash program.

For three days thestudents lived, breathed, studied and partied, Monash-style, in a funsampler of what university life has to offer.

The program involves thestudents living in the Halls of Residence on Clayton campus and takingpart in activities that represent student life at Monash. In the past, more than 80 per cent of the program's participants have applied tostudy at Monash.

The Year 11 students, who were hosted by currentMonash students, took part in social activities that included a danceparty, quiz night and sporting afternoon.

But the most significantaspect of the program was the academic component, in which studentsselected which faculty they were most interested in and participated inprograms organised by that faculty.

Lyndhurst Secondary Collegestudent Leigh Whittle said he had greatly enjoyed the three-day camp, which had given him a taste of what university life was about.

"I hadno idea what to expect," he said. "But not only was it great fun, italso gave me an understanding of what life on campus is like - itwas really good."

Ms Natasha Alexander, schools programs coordinatorwithin the Prospective Students Office, thanked the faculties for their"significant input" into the program.

"Every faculty was representedin one way or another at the camp through lectures or the facultyinformation sessions," she said.

"And while every aspect of the campwas a success, this would not have been the case without the involvementof the faculties, the student hosts and other members of the Monashcommunity."
