Monash Memo - articles - 19 February 2002Monash's Orientation Program for 2002 will begin on Monday25 February. The program, which now signals the start of the academicyear for first-year students, aims to introduce the students to theirfaculty and teaching staff and familiarise them with their campus. Coordinator of the Monash Transition Program Ms Tanya Kantanis saidOrientation was both social and academic. "In the past, greateremphasis has been placed on the social aspect of university life, but tohelp students better understand the expectations of academic life, thefocus has shifted," she said. "Prior to the start of classes, studentswill be better prepared this year by programs that providediscipline-related information, workshops on safety procedures, mocklectures and tutorials that highlight the expectations of staff and theresponsibilities of students, and hands-on library researchskills." Academic orientation programs will vary from one-off sessionsto more comprehensive ones with several interrelated components, shesaid. "Sessions by staff from services such as Language and Learning,the libraries and ITS will be held to give students an understanding ofthe breadth of services that support academic programs," she said.
