Mumbai Trophy returns to Monash

Students from theFaculty of Business and Economics have won the prestigious Mumbai Trophyfor the second year in a row.

The students travelled to India inDecember, where they presented their research paper titled 'IT solutionsto mass poverty in India'.

Last year, the Monash team won with a paperand PowerPoint presentation on 'India and the WTO'.

For the past threeyears, the National Centre for South Asia Studies and the Faculty ofBusiness and Economics have sent a group of undergraduate economicsstudents to participate in the Annual Economics Convention of theHyderabad Sind National Colleges of Mumbai University.

Each member ofthe group has to deliver a briefing and answer questions on their giventopic.

The award is given based on the content of the paper, thepresentation and the handling of the questions. Judges include prominentpublic figures such as economists, judges and mathematicians.

Japanese visiting scholar

Professor Wakita Harukowill be a distinguished visiting scholar in the Faculty of Arts from 7March to 5 May.

Professor Wakita, who is a professor of Japanesemedieval women's history at the University of Shiga Prefecture, Hikone,Japan, is distinguished in her area of research and the development ofcommerce in the medieval period.

Having made a pioneering contributionto the serious research of women's history in Japan, Professor Wakitahas provided significant leadership to researchers outside Japan, and inrecent years has been involved in ongoing research projects withhistorians in France, Italy and the US. Her host scholar is Dr AlisonTokita, Japanese Program, School of Languages, Cultures andLinguistics.

While at Monash, Professor Wakita will be giving a publiclecture, a lecture-demonstration on noh drama (a style of Japanesetheatre), a lunchtime research seminar and a workshop on readingmedieval documents in kanbun (literary Chinese). She will also beavailable (by appointment) for consultation with postgraduatestudents.

OHSE annual conference

Staff and students are invited to attendthe 2002 Monash OHSE Conference.

Topics to be covered at this year'sconference, to be held on Tuesday 26 February at the Clayton campus,include the new industrial manslaughter legislation and environmentalmanagement systems.
