Travelling film festival visits Monash

A selection of the world's bestindependent films will be shown at the Alexander Theatre from 26 to 28March as part of the Travelling Film Festival.

Presented by theMelbourne International Film Festival and Monash University PerformingArts, the festival will feature films from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan,Iran, Italy and the US.

Love and its possibilities, fantasy and magic,alienation and dislocation and death and retribution are some of thethemes that will be explored during the festival.

Travelling FilmFestival coordinator Mr Nick Feik said the festival was about bringingindependent films to areas that did not usually get to enjoynon-mainstream cinema.

Writer and director of Australian filmFloating Life Ms Clara Law will attend the screening of her filmon Tuesday 26 March at 5.30 pm and will discuss the themes of alienationand dislocation that her film raises.

Walk to win

Staff members are being urged to get moving around campus aspart of an OHSE drive to get people walking.

Last year, OHSE organisedsuccessful walks at Clayton and Caulfield campuses under its healthpromotion program, and this year the program has been expanded toinclude Peninsula and Gippsland.

The walks, which are being organisedin conjunction with Monash Sport, will be about 2.5 kilometres and willtake about 30 minutes.

They will be followed by a free, light andhealthy lunch for all participants, and spot prizes will be given outthroughout the event.

Walks will be held at Clayton campus at 1.05 pmon 9 April (meet at the main entrance of Monash Sport); Caulfield campusat 1 pm on 17 April (meet at the main entrance of S block); Peninsulacampus at 1 pm on 1 May (meet at the Fitness Centre); and Gippslandcampus at 1 pm on 1 May (meet at the Churchill and Monash LeisureCentre).

Anyone who has not exercised recently or has a seriousmedical condition should check with their doctor before joining thewalk.

All walkers should wear sunscreen and bring a hat and adrink.

Making music

TheSchool of Music will continue its collaboration with outstandingnational and international artists when it presents a chamber musicconcert at 7 pm tomorrow (27 March) in the Music Auditorium.

HartmutLindemann, professor of viola at the Hochschule fur Musik at Munster inGermany, will perform with Fintan Murphy and Zoe Knighton from theSchool of Music, Ben Martin, a young pianist from Melbourne, and CathyShephard, also from Munster.

The program will include the Brahms pianoquintet, the Arthur Benjamin sonata and some show pieces for viola andpiano.

Mr Lindemann, who has recorded three CDs with Mr Martin, willalso perform later in the year as a soloist with the MelbourneSymphony.

Career development scholarships

General staff are invited to apply forthe Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Resources) CareerDevelopment Scholarships.

The scholarships are available to staffwishing to gain a qualification to enhance their career prospects withinthe university.

The benefits may be used to support distanceeducation, TAFE or university courses leading to a formal qualification,or for single-subject study.

The scholarships will cover tuition feesfor up to one full year of study or equivalent and reimbursement forexpenses such as books and stationery.

Past awards have ranged from$200 to $1000, depending on the proposal submitted.

Preference will begiven to staff up to and including HEW level 5 with at least two yearsor equivalent of university service. Applicants must not already be inpossession of a degree-level qualification.

Applications should bemade to the manager, Staff Development Unit, by Friday 26 April and mustbe supported in writing by the staff member's supervisor and one otherperson.
