Debaters to tackle paid maternity leave issue

A panel of prominentadvocates and opponents of a national paid maternity leave scheme willparticipate in a debate organised by Monash later this month.

Thedebate, titled 'Paid parental leave - can we bear the pain?', is aninitiative of the Department of Management in association with theWork/life Association, the Victorian Office of Women's Policy and theCity of Melbourne.

Presenting the case for the introduction of thescheme will be federal sex discrimination commissioner Ms Pru Goward,executive director of University Sciences at the Australian CatholicUniversity Mr James Cameron and wages and employment rights researcherMs Cath Bowtell of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

Arguingagainst the scheme will be general manager of Workplace Relations andPolicy at the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry MrDavid Gregory, national executive director of Family Business AustraliaMs Julian Cambage and president of the Future of Work Foundation MrCharles Brass.

The debate, which will be held at 9 am on Friday 28June in the Melbourne Town Hall supper room, is open to members ofMonash community ($30) and the public ($40).
