Traditional West Javanese song and dance will entertain Monash staff and students
tomorrow (18 September) as part of the School of Music – Conservatorium
lunchtime concert series.
The concert will feature visiting musician Mr Wahyu Roche, a West Javanese
musician from the Academy of the Indonesian Arts in Bandung, Indonesia.
Mr Roche will perform a mix of traditional and new compositions on West Javanese
percussion instruments known as gamelan.
Students from the School of Music – Conservatorium will accompany Mr
Roche on the gamelan and Ms Sally Jkt will add colour to the performance through
dance.
The School of Music – Conservatorium invites a visiting artist from
a different part of Indonesia to teach at Monash every year to provide students
with exposure to various Indonesian music cultures.
Visiting artists take students for regular classes and undertake at least
one public performance. The school has presented such concerts and productions
annually at Monash performing arts venues since the early 1970s.
Mr Roche said he was delighted to spend time at Monash, which is renowned
for its gamelan and Indonesian music research.
“Monash students are very musical and the gamelan instruments here are
very good,” he said.
The public concert will be held from 1 pm to 2 pm in the Music Auditorium,
Performing Arts Centre, Clayton campus, tomorrow (18 September).
