Monash is preparing to open its doors for a full weekend to give thousands of visitors an insight into university life at its six Victorian campuses.
Monash Day will be held on Saturday 1 August at Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula, and on Sunday 2 August at Berwick, Caulfield and Clayton.
The event aims to give visitors a taste of a typical day in the life of a Monash
student. There will be opportunities for prospective students to seek out course
and career advice, as well as the chance to find out what it is really like
to study at university.
Each campus is staging a mix of information and entertainment activities.
Monash Day coordinator Ms Julie Ryan said the staggered Monash Day format over two days would give prospective students more opportunities to see the range of courses, teaching fa-cilities and student services available across all Victorian campuses.
Ms Ryan said there was also something for the parents this year, with areas set aside as 'retreats' for rest, refreshments and conversation.
On Sunday a shuttle bus will operate all day between the Clayton and Caulfield campuses.
Monash Day update
With only a few days to go before Monash Day, staff are working on final preparations for the event.
Parking
At Caulfield campus, parking will not be available within the university grounds, including Queens Avenue, the car pool area or area 1. Parking will be available in the yellow permit area, area 2 and the VATC Guineas car park.
There are no parking restrictions at Clayton or Peninsula campuses on Sunday 2 August. Staff may park in any zone excluding no standing zones, disabled zones and loading zones, which should only be used for short term loading and unloading.
General information areas
As in previous years, Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses will make use of General Information Areas on Monash Day. The locations are:

- Caulfield - level 3 of K Block and level 2 of B Block
- Clayton - Engineering Hall, building 60
- Gippsland - Binishell

Parkville
Cossar Hall is the place to start at Parkville campus for all course and career advice. It is also where current students will be starting guided tours of the campus every half hour during the day.

Around 60 participants from Monash staff and student bodies from across all Victorian campuses came together recently for a one-day student forum on the Learning and Teaching Operational Plan (LTOP) 1998.
The initiative, opened by deputy
vice-chancellor (Academic and Planning) Professor Alan Lindsay, was the first
of its kind jointly hosted by the Monash University Federation of Student Organisations
(MUFSO) and Monash University.
The forum focused on the implications of the plan for students and invited contributions from students regarding the implementation of the initiatives contained in the plan.
Professor Lindsay told the forum that it was an opportunity to further build stronger relations between staff and students.
"It is the beginning of an ongoing partnership between academic staff and students to achieve the LTOP's objectives," he said.
The forum was jointly convened by Professor Merran Evans and MUFSO convenor Ms Jacqui Cameron.
Student facilitators led group discussions on a range of LTOP-related issues, such as IT access, assessment and feedback and maintaining standards.
A panel drawn from the LTOP working party, associate deans (Teaching) and student support units answered questions from the assembled group.
MUFSO plans to run a number of other such forums and organise a student website to generate further debate.

A group of senior Indonesian bankers included a Monash dinner on their itinerary when they visited various commercial banks and financial institutions in Melbourne and Sydney last week.
Each year the Institut Bankir Indonesia holds a Comparative Study Program which includes a study tour of foreign banking systems. This year the institute chose to visit Australia and in particular Monash's Department of Accounting and Finance to gain a perspective on graduate bankers' educational requirements.
The senior members included 37 senior managers from various public banks in Indonesia as well as the vice chairman of Institut Bankeir, Indonesia, Mr Rachurat Saleh (pictured right), and directors and senior members of the institute.
The dinner was also attended by guests from a wide spectrum of commercial banking and financial institutions in Australia.

Where do you go when things get on top of you, when you need to obtain a housing loan, organise a wedding, arrange accommodation, find out about child care, and enlist the services of a professional counsellor to empower you to handle all of these life changing events? You go west, of course.
Community Services - which includes chaplaincy, child care, counselling, financial aid and housing services - has moved from the east end of the Union building to the west end, first floor, Western Extension, Union building. The services are professional, confidential and free for all Monash staff and students.
Sharpen your pencils and design a cover for the 1999 Union Diary/Directory.
Entries can be drawings, paintings, photographs or other images that would look great on the cover of 20,000 diaries.
The cover design for the 1999 diary should represent the fun part of being a student at Monash.
Entry forms are available at the Union Information Desk, Clayton campus. The closing date is 21 August.
