Monash staff can now tap into their own in-house expertise when developing new ways to improve teaching and learning within their faculties.

The Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) has selected ten staff to represent each of Monash's faculties on the CHED Associates Scheme, an innovative faculty-based support program announced recently by deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and Planning) Professor Alan Lindsay.

The associates will assist their faculties and departments in implementing education development opportunities, in line with the university's Learning and Teaching Operational Plan, particularly in the area of flexible learning.

Program coordinator Dr Helen Edwards said the new CHED initiative encouraged networking and the sharing of information and expertise across all faculties and campuses.

Dr Edwards said the associates, working in conjunction with CHED and the associate dean (Teaching) of their faculties, would undertake projects relevant to their faculties.

"These projects will be practical and tailored to meet the needs of the particular academic disciplines," she said.

The projects include:

Managing diversity

A new brochure promoting equity and a quality teaching and learning environment for Monash's diverse student community has been released.

The brochure, 'Monash has many faces: Quality teaching for all', is an initiative of the university's Equity Plan, released earlier this year, and emphasises a culturally sensitive and discrimination-free educational environment at Monash.

Some of the issues which can potentially confront members of the university's diverse student body have been translated into cartoons by artist Ian Gunn. The brochure also includes information about where students can get advice and support on a range of equal opportunity matters.

Monash International and the faculties of Business & Economics, Engineering and Information Technology have jointly funded the brochure. It was produced by a working party comprising staff from Monash International, CHED, the Language and Learning Services Unit and students from the Monash University International Students Society and the Monash Students Association at Caulfield campus.
