Arts at Monash

Monash's vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson has welcomed the recommendations of a review group report into the future direction of the Arts faculty.

The report has been developed by the review group during the past two months and involved widespread discussions and consultation across all Monash campuses and faculties.

The review group was set up at Professor Robinson's request to identify clear academic and research directions for Arts at Monash to ensure the faculty's future is strong and viable.

The comprehensive report makes 35 recommendations in key areas such as teaching, learning, research and staffing. A range of new initiatives and strategies are planned which build on the faculty's strengths and profile in the diverse fields of the humanities and social sciences.

This new direction, according to the report, is not only academically sound, it is also financially and organisationally responsible, particularly in light of major funding pressures facing the faculty and higher education generally.

The report 'Arts at Monash' provides a 'Recommended Blueprint for Change'. It will be further considered at the next meeting of the Arts Faculty Board on 9 September.

As part of the next stage in the process, Professor Robinson has invited comment, advice and suggestions on the 'Recommended Blueprint' from all individuals and groups across the university. Comments can be forwarded to Ms Sally Stafford at the University Secretariat on sally.stafford@adm.monash.edu.au

Discussions within the Arts faculty and further consideration within the university will determine the extent and timing of any key changes implemented as a result of the report.

Under the new direction, new courses will be introduced and others enhanced and renamed, while areas of identified low student demand will be phased out. The full transition could take up to three years.

In accordance with university policy, all students currently enrolled in the Arts faculty will have the opportunity to complete their major course of study.

On receiving the report, Professor Robinson said the Arts faculty had been examining its forward direction for almost two years. This was partly due to its projected $5 million deficit by the year 2001 which had been brought about by government funding cutbacks.

"All faculties and administration areas of Monash have had to absorb the combined impact of a $10 million reduction in Federal Government operating funds and $30 million in salary rises, over a three-year period," he said.

The review group was chaired by the Dean of the Arts faculty, Professor M. Quartly, and included senior Arts faculty members, Professor B. Caine, Professor C. Cocklin, Dr D. Cuthbert, Professor G. Davison and Professor R. Mouer. Senior non-faculty members were Professor M. Evans, Professor A Lindsay, and Mr D. Phillips. The review group was also assisted in its deliberations by Professor M. Brennan and Professor R. Mortley.
