Monash hosts eminent jurists

Monash's Law faculty recently hosted a two-week visit by a former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, Sir Anthony Mason.

Sir Anthony delivered a series of lectures to staff, students, the legal and business community, including the Fiat Justitia Lecture for public law teachers, held last Thursday at Monash's Clayton campus.

Professor H. P. Lee, associate dean (International) of the Law faculty, said Monash was privileged to host such a distinguished Australian jurist.

"Sir Anthony's visit provided a fantastic opportunity for both staff and students to benefit from his insight into developments with the High Court, and specifically for staff to discuss aspects of their research and teaching," Professor Lee said.

"A Justice of the High Court from 1972 to 1987 and Chief Justice until his retirement in 1995, Sir Anthony is regarded as one of Australia's most outstanding jurists. He was Chief Justice of the High Court when it began to focus on the idea of implied freedoms (implied within the Constitution), especially the implied freedom of political speech, a development which sparked ongoing controversy in Australia."

In another significant development, former High Court Justice Sir Daryl Dawson has accepted a position as an adjunct professor in Monash's Law faculty.

Sir Daryl will be involved in the intellectual life of the faculty, delivering lectures to staff and students as well as the public on behalf of the faculty.
