New home for legal service

The Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service has moved into a new $500,000 facility in Beddoe Avenue, near Monash's Clayton campus.

Vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson officially opened the new building at a launch last Tuesday (10 November), attended by 140 guests, including staff and students as well as representatives from the legal profession and local community. Chief Justice of the Victorian Supreme Court the Honourable Mr Justice Phillips gave the keynote address.

The new building is on the site of the original Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service, which was set up in 1979 by Monash's Faculty of Law as a community outreach facility in a former farmhouse.

Centre coordinator Mr Ross Hyams said the centre had outgrown "hopelessly crowded and outdated" conditions in the original building.

The new facility, funded by the university with support from the Rotary Club of Huntingdale, enabled the centre to accommodate the growing demand for its legal advocacy services, he said.

During the construction phase, which took more than a year, the centre operated from another premises in Beddoe Avenue.

The Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service, together with Springvale Legal Service (the other community legal service operated by Monash's Faculty of Law), provides free legal services to residents living in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs.

The services are provided by fourth and final-year law students undertaking the subject 'Professional practice'.

The students, under supervision, give free advice on most legal matters, interviewing up to 100 clients weekly.
