In a significant decision handed down on 11 May 1998, the Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) issued a new award to replace the Higher Education (Non Continuing Contract Employment) Interim Award 1996.
The focus of the decision has been on the appropriate use of and conditions associated with fixed-term employment contracts. The decision takes effect from 30 June 1998.
Monash's Personnel Services advises that the decision is complex and is still being analysed, however it is clear that there will be restrictions on the issuing of fixed-term contracts after 30 June 1998.
Further information on the implications of this decision for Monash staff will be issued as soon as it becomes available.
