Rhodes honour for Monash student

Monash science/law student Sanya Smith caught the attention of the selection committee for the Victorian Rhodes Scholarship with her ambition to undertake further research into malaria in developing countries.

Sanya, 23, who is currently studying towards an honours degree in science and law, was named this year's Victoria's Rhodes Scholar and will leave for a year of study at Oxford University in October.

"It's very exciting and it opens the way for others like me," she said, after hearing of her success last week.

The scholarship is an annual prize for young scholars who demonstrate high intellectual academic ability as well as an interest and involvement in the community, leadership qualities and sporting achievement. In a highly competitive field, Sanya out-shone five other candidates, all female, on the Victorian shortlist.

Her honours work is being supervised by Dr Robert Pike and Dr Stephen Bottomley in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. At Oxford, Sanya aims to pursue postgraduate research in molecular biology. After completing her PhD, she would like to work on malaria and other diseases affecting the developing world.

What's in a name?

Fifteen of an estimated 20 senior management, academic and executive staff at Monash who share the first name 'John' recently got together for a drink at the Monash University Club on Clayton campus.

The casual get-together was organised by Information Technology dean Professor John Rosenberg. Pictured from left, front, are Associate Professor John Hurst of the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Professor John Rosenberg (with Monash's namesake Sir John Monash) and Professor John Crossley of the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering. From left, at rear, are Professor John Anderson, Gippsland campus director, Mr John Julian, director of the Integrated Administrative Systems project, and Mr John Trembath, assistant general manager, Facilities and Services Division.

Transition conference

Staff can discover ways to help smooth the path to university for school leavers at a forthcoming conference at Monash.

The Tackling the Transition Conference, to be held next Tuesday and Wednesday (8 and 9 December) on Clayton campus, will bring together careers coordinators, school and university teachers and student advisers to explore a range of issues facing both students and staff as school leavers make the transition to uni life.

Issues to be examined include how students make friends and how well they adapt academically to the demands of the higher education environment.

Wind energy conference

World authority on wind energy Mr Paul Gipe is keynote speaker at the Wind Energy for Utilities, Developers and Planners Workshop to be held on Monday 30 November at Monash's Clayton campus.

The workshop has been organised by Monash's Centre for Electrical Power Engineering, ANZSES and ATA, and will be coordinated by Dr Peter Freere from the university's Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

A US-based wind energy advocate and authority on large wind turbines, Mr Gipe was recently hailed by the World Renewable Energy Congress as "a pioneer in renewable energy".

Mr Gipe has just completed a six-month survey of the latest trends in wind energy technology and implementation in Europe and the US, and will detail some of his findings at the workshop.

Workshop sponsors Enercon and NEG Micon will also make presentations along with Turbine companies Vestas and Nordex, and speakers from international wind energy consultancy Garrad Hassan will discuss the process of planning a wind farm.
