Leave management initiatives

In line with the Monash Plan, the university is continually seeking to create and provide competitive and flexible work practices for staff.

Parts D & E of the recent Enterprise Agreement for academic and general staff deal with matters concerning leave management and Flexible Work Practices. Following are some of the new and existing initiatives available to staff.

This flexible and voluntary working scheme can potentially benefit staff who want to tailor their workload more closely around their family responsibilities. As well, it will suit staff who want to extend their leave options for personal reasons. The scheme gives staff access to an additional four weeks paid leave per annum. Staff who work under this arrangement will receive 48/52 of their annual salary, spread across a 52-week period. Staff who wish to participate in the 48/52 scheme can obtain an application form from the Personnel Home Page (http://www.monash. edu.au/personnel). Applications approved by the relevant head of budgetary unit will then be forwarded to Personnel.

Who is eligible?

Staff covered by the Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 1998 except for casual/sessional staff, and staff with maximum annual and/or long service leave balances as defined in clauses 17 and 18. Eligible staff may apply immediately.

Staff who participate in this scheme will receive an extra 3.5 days leave, thus forfeiting their annual leave loading for the year. The 3.5 days are non-cumulative and must be taken prior to 31 December in any given year. Staff wishing to join this scheme in 1999 should submit applications to the head of their divisional/department budgetary unit. Applications must be received in Personnel Services by no later than 31 January 1999. The scheme is voluntary.

Staff with a long service leave balance in excess of 4.5 months may make an application to Personnel Services to take long service leave at double the staff member's rate of pay, thereby reducing the accrued long service leave credits by twice the amount of leave actually taken.

Supervisors should by now have provided to their staff details of leave entitlements, projected to 31 December 1998, a leave plan should be agreed with their supervisor and an approved leave form then submitted to Personnel Services without delay.

Staff members who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders are now entitled to up to a maximum of 5 days paid leave per calendar year and up to 10 days unpaid leave per calendar year for the purposes of attending or preparing for relevant cultural and ceremonial obligations. Further information on any aspect of leave management may be obtained from Personnel Client Services on extn 56039, or the relevant personnel administration officer.
