Engineering excellence

Monash vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson
presents Mr Dennis Shore, deputy chair of the
Gippsland Campus Advisory Council, with his award.

Monash's Faculty of Engineering recently hosted an awards night celebrating academic excellence, achievement and service to the field of engineering.

Awards, prizes and scholarships totalling about $44,000 were presented to students studying across all year levels and in all engineering disciplines at the Clayton, Gippsland and Caulfield campuses.

The event, held at the Clayton campus on 26 May, was attended by current and former Monash academic staff as well as notable engineering industry representatives from companies including Esso, Fisher Stewart, Intel Australia, Orica Engineering and Visy Paper.

The Faculty of Engineering Sir John Monash Medal was awarded to Mr Dennis Shore, former chairman of the management committee of the Australian Pulp and Paper Institute in Monash's Department of Chemical Engineering for his outstanding service and contribution to the faculty.

Joint venture targets animal welfare

Monash, the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Government have pooled their expertise to form an internationally competitive research, teaching and training resource in animal welfare at Werribee.

The Animal Welfare Centre a collaborative venture between Monash's Psychology and Physiology departments, Melbourne University's Institute of Land and Food Resources and the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment was launched last week by Victoria's Deputy Premier and Agriculture and Resources Minister Mr Pat McNamara.

The centre aims to help improve the welfare of farm, laboratory, companion and captive animals while promoting increased agricultural wealth through sustainable animal welfare practices.

The centre's key functions will include:

Award for Monash physicist

Dr Trevor Hicks, reader in physics at Monash, has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Australian Institute for Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) for 1998.

The medal is awarded annually by AINSE for outstanding research over the past five years.

Dr Hicks's research is largely in the field of magnetism, for which he uses the neutron beams of the research reactor at the Lucas Heights laboratories of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (Ansto).

He is known in Australia for his pion-eering research into the polarisation of neutrons and was responsible for the design of several instruments at the Lucas Heights reactor.

AINSE is a consortium of almost all Australian universities, the University of Auckland and Ansto, which supports science and engineering projects requiring nuclear techniques at Lucas Heights and throughout Australia.

Dr Hicks is the author of a recently published book, Magnetism in Disorder, by Oxford University Press and a comprehensive review on neutron polarisation analysis.

Career development scholarships

General staff members seeking to gain qualifications that will enhance their career prospects within Monash are invited to apply for the General Manager's Career Development Scholarships.

The scholarships apply to either distance education, TAFE or university courses leading to a formal qualification or to single subjects.

The award benefit covers:

Applications can be made to the Manager, Performance Development & Training Branch, until Friday 26 June and must be supported in writing by the staff member's supervisor and one other person.

Preference will be given to staff members up to and including HEW level 5 with two years' recognised university service. Applicants must not already have a degree level qualification.

Purchasing power

Monash has established a special sub-group of its Resources and Finance Committee to investigate improved processes for purchasing goods and services for the university.

The formation of the new Purchasing Committee is in response to the findings of a recent independent survey into the university's procurement practices which estimated that substantial savings could be achieved by streamlining some of these practices.

The survey identified a need to establish more agreements with suppliers to the university with a view to enhancing Monash's overall purchasing power.

The new position of manager (Procurement Services) was also created to help identify, develop and implement programs which will improve the university's purchasing effectiveness.

Mr Harry Bracegirdle has been recently appointed to the position, which reports directly to the assistant general manager (Facilities & Services), and will service the requirements of the Purchasing Committee.

"This role is very much one of liaison between suppliers and the many staff across all sections of the university who are involved in purchasing," Mr Bracegirdle said.

Mr Bracegirdle has had wide experience at Monash, including 14 years as resources manager in the Department of Physics. For the past three years, he was seconded to the CASMAC finance program, and more recently worked with the Integrated Administrative Systems project, particularly in the evaluation and selection stage, where his role as client liaison manager drew on his experience in purchasing and budgeting at the faculty level.

Mr Bracegirdle will continue to work closely with the IAS project in relation to purchasing.

Holiday child care

A holiday program for children aged five to 12 starts on 29 June and runs until 10 July.

The program will run on Clayton campus daily from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. For further information, contact Ms Rita Gualtieri on extn 54119.
