US post for leading ethicist

Leading Monash ethicist and philosopher Professor Peter Singer has accepted a prestigious academic appointment at Princeton University in the US.

In his new position as the De Camp professor of bioethics at Princeton's Centre for Human Values, Professor Singer will continue the work he has been involved in at Monash's Centre for Human Bioethics.

Professor Singer, who joined Monash in 1977, said the new permanent post would involve both research and teaching.

"It would be hard to think of a better appointment anywhere in the world," he said. "Although bioethics is a relatively new field for Princeton, by being in America I will become part of a much larger bioethics scene."

Professor Singer will take up his position - Princeton's first chair in bioethics - in August next year.
