As staff were previously advised, the enterprise bargaining agreement for academic and general staff was signed by the university and the NTEU and lodged with the Australian Industrial Relations Commission on 22 May 1998. It had been anticipated that formal certification of the agreement would occur in early to mid-June.
The university has since been formally advised that the agreement certification hearing will not be held until 30 June 1998. It appears that the delay in the hearing is due to the current heavy workload of the AIRC.
Deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and Planning) Professor Alan Lindsay said that due to the 30 June hearing date, salary increases could unfortunately not be included in the 2 July 1998 pay as originally planned.
"It is now likely that the first enterprise bargaining instalment of a 6% increase and the second enterprise bargaining instalment of a 4% increase will appear in the 16 July 1998 pay," Professor Lindsay said. "The backpay and superannuation adjustments will occur in the following pay on 30 July 1998."
"While it is regrettable that the hearing has been delayed, the university is hopeful that the agreement will be certified on 30 June 1998 and that the salary increases and backpay can then proceed rapidly."
Professor Lindsay said the university would keep staff informed about any
further developments.
