25-year service medals

Ninety Monash staff who have worked at the university for at least 25 years will be honoured at a ceremony in September.

Medals will be presented to staff who have given 25 years or more continuous, full-time service to the university as at 1 May 1998.

They include staff who became members of Monash University following mergers with the former Chisholm Institute of Technology, the former Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education and the Victorian College of Pharmacy.

The 1998 ceremony will mark the seventh occasion at which medals have been presented. The first presentation was made by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in May 1986 as part of the university's silver jubilee celebrations.

This year's presentations, to be held on 24 September, will be made by Monash chancellor Mr Bill Rogers AO. Monash vice-chancellor and president Professor David Robinson will be guest speaker.

Heads of departments and schools that have staff receiving medals will be invited to the ceremony. Colleagues of staff receiving medals are also welcome to attend. Light refreshments will follow the presentation.

Anyone wishing to attend the ceremony should contact Ms Karen Pedrotti, Performance Development and Training, on extn 56825, or email karen.pedrotti@ adm.monash.edu.au by Friday 10 July.

Members of staff who believe they are eligible for an award and have not received a personal letter from the vice-chancellor inviting them to attend the ceremony should contact Ms Pedrotti as soon as possible.

Keeping tabs on family business

Monash University and The CEO Institute have joined forces to develop The CEO Institute Family Firm Stock Index, a first-ever index that tracks the performance of family business.

The joint venture was launched at the institute's annual cocktail reception in Melbourne last week, attended by the Victorian Premier, Mr Jeff Kennett, and some of the nation's key business leaders.

CEO Institute executive chairman Mr Ken Gunn said the index, which is expected to be released later this year, was an Australian first.

"This is an exciting initiative between Monash and the institute because it applies the university's research expertise to business in an innovative and practical way," he said.

The index is being developed by Faculty of Business & Economics academics Professor Claudio Romano and Dr Kosmas Smrynios, of the National Mutual Family Business Research Unit, in partnership with The CEO Institute. It is designed to track the performance of family-controlled firms listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Currently, about 16 per cent of listed companies are family controlled.

"If we can learn from the index what makes businesses successful, we will be providing an invaluable service to our members, 80 per cent of whom are family businesses," Mr Gunn said.
