A medical doctor, Professor Mitchell began her career with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1978.

After graduating, she took up a position as a resident medical officer at Royal Melbourne Hospital, followed by medical registrar appointments at the Royal Canberra and Alfred hospitals. She also trained as a specialist physician in the field of haematology.

Professor Mitchell undertook her doctorate in the Department of Medicine at Monash Medical School and was awarded her PhD in 1988. She later worked at Washington University Medical School as a National Heart Foundation Post-Doctoral Research Fellow.

In 1990 she returned to Monash as a senior lecturer and last month was awarded vice-chancellor's awards for distinguished teaching and postgraduate supervision.
