Researchers in the Faculty of Education have secured a grant of almost $600,000 for three projects to develop professional standards and performance assessments for school teachers.
This marks the first time a grant from the Australian Research Council's Strategic Partnerships with Industry - Research and Training (SPIRT) scheme has been awarded for a collaborative research project between a university and professional teacher associations.
The three-year projects, which have been developed in response to national pressure to improve teaching in Australian schools, will be coordinated by Monash in partnership with the professional associations of science, maths and English teachers.
The projects aim to not only establish frameworks of standards that describe what teachers should know and be able to do, but also develop new methods for assessing whether teachers have attained these standards.
Associate Professor Lawrence Ingvarson, a Faculty of Education partner in the science project, said combining the research expertise of the faculty with the knowledge and experience of the professional teaching associations was exciting and timely.
"It is crucial to raise professional teaching standards and the status of the profession. This collaborative research will leave Monash with a greatly enhanced capacity to conduct this kind of research and development work with many other professional associations," he said.
The science project is being coordinated by Dr Ingvarson, Professor Richard Gunstone and Associate Professor Glenn Rowley, in conjunction with the Australian Science Teachers Association.
The maths project is being coordinated by Professor Alan Bishop, Dr Ingvarson, Associate Professor Rowley and Dr Barbara Clarke, in partnership with the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers.
The English project is being coordinated by Associate Professor Margaret Gill and Dr Brenton Doecke, in conjunction with several universities, national professional associations and government bodies.
