The
key to success, according to some management experts, is to get to know all
facets of the business. If this is the case, it explains Janet Kemp's 'brilliant
career' at Monash.
Janet has progressed from undergraduate to postgraduate student and tutor in the Department of Economics, to business manager at the Institute of Reproduction and Development, and finally to director of resources for the Faculty of Medicine. There was also a 10-year stint at the then State Department of Finance, but Monash drew her back again.
Janet, who has been in her current position since November 1998, says she especially enjoys the enthusiasm and innovations of the new dean, Professor Nick Saunders, as well as the cooperative professional relationships she has built with department heads and professors.
A recent career highlight was receiving the R. L. Martin Travelling Fellowship, which enabled Janet to attend an international conference on commercialisation, licensing and ownership of intellectual property in Edinburgh last year.
In her spare time, Janet enjoys bushwalking with her husband, playing tennis, lead-lighting and walking her Jack Russell terrier Kelly.
If she could sum up her philosophy about working at Monash, it would be that she likes to make a difference to leave her mark and make positive changes. So far, so good.
