Irena Cosic

Associate Professor Irena Cosic is distinguished by being a senior woman in engineering as well as in her research specialisation of bioelectromagnetism - both rare achievements.

A leading light in the Faculty of Engineering, Irena recently made the move from Caulfield to Clayton when the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering was consolidated on the one campus.

"There have been some real benefits from the move, among them better staff communication," said Irena.

Originally from Belgrade, known for its engineering excellence and for its support of women engineers, Irena has been pleased to note the increased participation of women in electrical engineering at Monash since she arrived 10 years ago. "I informally mentor female students, and currently half the postgraduate students I supervise are women," she said.

Irena' s work takes her around the world, a part of the job she loves. She has been a visiting scientist in Paris and Wisconsin and with Hewlett-Packard and Genentech. Her wide international collaborations connect her with Japan, Norway and England, and have attracted both ARC and industry funding to the university.

A career highlight was publishing a book on her research in molecular bioactivity, a relatively new subject.

Irena's career keeps her busy, but she still finds time to play table tennis and volleyball, and go swimming in the bay.
