The Mihalakopoulos women

Meet three women from one family who have made Monash their family business - Alexandra Mihalakopoulos (centre) and her daughters, Maria (left) and Vicki (right), have between them worked 33 years at Monash's Clayton campus.

Alexandra - Alex to her friends - came to Melbourne in 1973 as a young bride from the Pelopponese Islands in Greece. She recently celebrated her 19th year as a part-time cleaner at Monash, working in various locations. A career highlight was her award of appreciation as 'best cleaner' by the Religious Centre three years ago.

Alex inspired her daughters to seek employment at Monash, too.

Maria began as a junior in the Chemistry department 10 years ago and is now an administrative officer within Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

"I have enjoyed learning the ropes to become a general office supervisor," she said. Maria is engaged to be married next year, an event which the entire family is naturally looking forward to.

The youngest family member, Vicki, whose friendly personality is now well known to many staff around the university, commenced at Monash in 1995, and shares her time as information officer equally between Staff Development and Communications and the Centre for Higher Education Development.

Even the family members at home contribute to Monash. Alex's husband, Louis, grows roses for Vicki's reception desk throughout most of the year, while sister Soula is also a one-time Monash employee.

This family's loyalty to the university is undoubtedly Monash's gain.
